However, the version number I have, -9, is one higher than the version in etch.
I removed the package, and stability seems to have returned. Are the "(no debugging symbols found)" messages and the [Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled] Error while reading shared library symbols: Cannot find new threads: generic error Cannot find new threads: generic error (gdb) c normal?
