Expected results:
3&4) layout as seen by the user is identical
Actual results:
3) F1 is square, "ret" is over "1"
4) F1 is very wide (from Q to P), "ret" is not over "1"
More info:
1) I started to use -debug so that I could kill xvkbd with ctrl-c when
I was creating a new keyboard layout and had to fine-tune it all
the time. Then I noticed that -debug changes how the layout
looks. Different behavior in normal and -debug mode makes it
somewhat difficult to develop my keyboard layouts. I want to use
-debug to be able to kill xvkbd with ctrl-c (separate bug report
about it) but I don't want to use -debug all the time since I don't
want that .xsession-errors contains my passwords.
