as I wrote in my previous post (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=502760#15) and as shown by the output in Lucas post, 
nscd was only unpacked, not configured yet.

and before nscd is configured:
# ls /etc/init.d/nscd*         
/etc/init.d/nscd.dpkg-new

so no init script yet but the binary exists:
# ls /usr/sbin/nscd  
/usr/sbin/nscd

of course, once nscd is configured:
# ls /etc/init.d/nscd*         
/etc/init.d/nscd.dpkg
