"mount" required manual intervention, which basically stopped the "aptitude dist-upgrade" path completely. The problem seemed to be that it required nfs-common to be upgraded first, and when I did "aptitude install nfs-common" that required new packages to be installed. The second issue was that for some reason xserver-xorg-video-nv was not installed at the end of all of the upgrades, so X would not start.
