Perhaps an init.d script, disabled by default, wouldn't hurt and would
be helpful in some situations. But wouldn't HAL handle all kinds of
use? I'm motivated to make some reasonable mechanism for starting and
stopping scannbuttond; although my scanner has no power button I switch
it on (by plugging into a socket) only when I intend to scan.

The only problem is that I'm not aware about any reasonable HAL
documentation/tutorial (well, I didn't look for it very hard). If
anybody can point me to one, I can look at possible ways to utilize the
hotplug mechanisms.

Well, if there is nothing better, this may be a poor man's way to do it.

If you submit a patch, I'll be glad to add it to the package :-).
