Package: statnews
Version: 2.4
Severity: normal

Hello,

I wanted to get statistics out of a mailing list archive, and I tried
statnews because the description mentions mailing lists.

Once I installed it however, neither the manpage nor the command line
mention anything about reading mailing lists instead of news spools. I
have my mail in Maildir directories, which should make it easy for
statnews to pick it up, but I failed. For example:

  statnews --spooldir=Maildir/.0-debian-newmaint/ cur

The man page mentions that:

"More precisely, it can be used with every message base that stores
each message in a file in some directory."

this would cover Maildirs, but it's not clear how to point it to a
maildir. I suggest that if I need to read the source code of the
program in order to understand how to make it read mailing lists, then
"mailing list" should be dropped from the description or some bit of
documentation should be added to the manpage.

Ciao,

Enrico
