As a frequent user of --diff, it was one of the first things I tried whilst testing your patch and I'd like to get that working before committing the changes.

Well, why don't we compromise and say that if your patch isn't ready to go by the time Squeeze becomes testing, then we apply mine as a fix for this bug as a stop-gap. :-)

Besides, it's two completely different areas of the code that you need to work with, and they seem to handle the diff in completely different ways. The only bit in common is the 'git rev-parse', and that could get factored out.
