APNG was presented to the PNG group last year or maybe the year before
and it was disapproved because PNG is a single-image format. The group
does not want to have PNG in the same mess as GIF, where you don't
know what is inside the file without decoding the file.

Trying to make libpng work with multiple (APNG) images has not worked out
that well, anyhow, although I've given it a pretty good effort. See mozilla
bug #433047
