Could you test the daily built images of the installer: http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/powerpc/iso-cd/debian-testing-powerpc-netinst.iso Instead of installing Debian Etch, you will then install Debian Lenny (unless you boot in expert mode and choose to install "stable") but that will be much worthwhile for the Debian Installer team as bugs with Etch images on some machines avec very unlikely to be fixed now....
