The package was originally crafted by Bill Geddes based on ideas from me, after Bill engaged in an "interesting" email exchange with RMS and we all agreed it would be nice if it were easier for Debian users to detect if non-free software was installed on their system. Bill wrote the original implementation, and I wrote the original man page. ;-) Since then, Bill dropped out of active participation in Debian, and Stephen, who is another one of my friends and former co-workers, took over the package. I have mostly been ignoring the package since then, though I retain a certain desire to participate in major decisions... Stephen and I have talked at various times about the idea of starting over and re-implementing this package cleanly now that both we understand more about the problem and some of the interfaces to the data have changed/improved since the original was written. Frankly, we are both guilty of just not getting around to working on vrms, because we have other, more exciting stuff to work on much of the time. I think it would be great to have your help improving this package! To that end, I propose that we move vrms to a team maintainership, and have created a new mailing list to that end: http://lists.gag.com/mailman/listinfo/debian-vrms Initial list members are Stephen and me, please feel free to subscribe yourselves and we can begin discussing there how to proceed to improve this package.
