I checked both lynx (2.8.5-2sarge2.2) and lynx (2.8.6-2) but they didn't provide any extra setting for ASSUME_CHARSET so I'm puzzled very much now. Are you sure that _without any modification of configuration_, old lynx in Etch worked fine with this problem? It is easy to set ASSUME_CHARSET:utf-8 in lynx.cfg but I'm not so sure if this is good or not at present.
