This issue has been already discussed in pkg-octave-devel [1]. It does not seem that we have reached a consensus and the interest on this just vanished down. My current opinion is that an octave add-on package should _*always_* autoload its functions. Packages in Debian should work out of the box after installation. If the user do not want the overload, she just does "apt-get remove octave-nan". Easy, simple, period. I would be inclined to close this bug report but let us discuss this a little further.
