That should work, although. Can you check /var/log/syslog or /var/log/mysql.err for the reason mysqld did not startup? > I believe the mysql-client and mysql-server packages should also have > been upgraded to the same version as mysql-common. "apt-get -u upgrade" should list mysql-server (4.0.x) as upgrade candidate. Does it?
