Hi, the story is like this: I installed debian from some disk that I had on 
two different laptop. The disks came with kernel 2.6.18. After installation 
booting was done as usual, with the usual times. After I updated to the 
latest kernel the booting started to take much longer, as described in the 
original mail.
I installed grub2 and the problem went away (altough this new grub2 seems to 
load slower than the grub1 that came with the old debian disks). I won't 
pursue to installing grub1 back if you don't ask me to.
From my point of view is ok to close this bug.
