Please remember to mail the bug submitter either directly or via the
[EMAIL PROTECTED] alias, otherwise the BTS will not do

That's kind of true for the compat-mode setting, which is a real
configuration variable, and you have to change it explicitly, but not
for the main-window-* ones, which are just state variables, and change
every time the window state is changed, which is the really annoying
part.

For compat-mode, the program should have an internal default setting,
and only write the configuration value when it's changes from that
default by the user through the program UI.

For the main-window-* state values, they should go probably somewhere
else, into a state file.
