Hi,

I've just stumbled onto this bug searching for other ones, and I think
I know the cause: NPTL. NPTL is broken in UML for Linux 2.6, and this breaks
many programs.

The workaround is to move /lib/tls out of the way (/lib/tls.DISABLED,
for example). Doing this and rebooting the UML (to ensure that no program
remains with the "bad" libraries in memory) should fix it.
