I don't have the thumbnails problem, but I definitely have the 100% CPU problem on two very recent installs of Lenny AMD64 (snapshot dated 9/15). Whenever I go to the gnome-appearance-properties tab of the gnome control center (or even if I right click on the GNOME desktop and click the 'Change Background' menu entry which takes me to gnome-appearance-properties), it pegs at 100% CPU. I can quit the app, but it remains pegged at 100% CPU and have to kill it manually.
