"invoke-rc.d mysql stop" didn't actually killed the processes, I repeated several times without success. Only killall -9 could get rid of them. After this I restart the mysql server again, so far mysql looks to be working correctly. I don't know if I will be able to provide much more info, but count on me if you think I can be of any help.
