Bug#198507: dh_install: fails if filenames have an embedded space

I'm having the same problem with dh_install: I have a set of user
provided files that I need to turn into a Debian package. But this fails 
if any of the filenames contains a space.

So has any progress been made in the past 5 years?
Is there a known workaround?
