that's a segfault. no fun. could you run:
strace -f strace.out /usr/sbin/mysqld --basedir=/usr --datadir=/var/lib/mysql
--user=mysql --pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid
and send us a copy of strace.out?
