I have the exact same problem as in message #17. The error messages are the same.
I suspect it has something to do with the NVIDIA proprietary drivers (I have 71.84.06 installed right now). I didn't see this problem before I install the NVIDIA driver (and gcc-4.1, make, build-essential and linux-headers to support the driver).
