I just checked once more; steps to reproduce: - rm /var/log/lastlog - in /etc/pam.d/login, enable the pam_lastlog (in case you have disabled it - it’s enabled by default) - go to a text console (I mean CTRL-ALT-F1) - enter login/password - and... /var/log/lastlog has reappeared. I have login 1:4.1.1-3 and libpam-modules 1.0.1-3. This obviously does not happen when logging via ssh/gdm/..., since these do not use /etc/pam.d/login at all.
