Noonburg directly, who said: "There is a known bug in the ASCII85 encoder that shows up on 64-bit systems only." He suggested the following workaround: add psASCIIHex yes to your .xpdfrc file. The PS files are a bit larger, but if the goal is to use them only for printing, this isn't a problem.
