Another option could be to _not_ bring the link up before calling ethtool-lite as link detection seems to work just as well when the link is down as when it is up, at least on this laptop. The usleep can then be removed as well. The reason it was added in the first place is unclear (the changelog for r22513 just says "fix everything"...).
