I am not sure if this is a change in mplayer or xscreensaver. However, recently mplayer fails to stop xscreensaver from blanking the screen. According to mplayer documentation a standard X interface for stopping the screensaver exists and xscreensaver does not use it. It would be nice if this worked or at least the man page explained why it's not working.
