I think the problem is in (at least, other places possible):
clients/tools/common.c:1371
...
tool_bind()
...
if ( ldap_result( ld, msgid, LDAP_MSG_ALL, NULL, &result ) == -1 ) {
where ldap_result is called with timeout=NULL ie infinite, regardless of
passed arg.
