If your boot sequence ends with a message like
> Starting K Display Manager: kdm.
> Timidity is not yet configured.
> Enable Alsa Sequencer first by editing /etc/default/timidity.
try to disable the corresponding init script, e.g. /etc/init.d/timidity in this 
case.
Now KDM works for me.
