Thanks for the report.  I suspect this is a bug in the GNUstep art
backend, perhaps even Debian-specific (due to changes for the
interaction with Defoma and font registration).

Could you please install the gnustep-back0.14-cairo package, then do as
a normal user:

$ defaults write NSGlobalDomain GSBackend libgnustep-cairo

Then restart Charmap and share your observations?  Switching ranges
happens almost instantly for me, on a much less powerful machine than
yours.
