Package: nautilus Version: 2.20.0-6 Followup-For: Bug #454764
I believe something related occurs on logout of a regular user when all of usual desktop session daemons (like network manager, power manager, etc.) are disabled. Such a setup is common for multiuser systems. It appears that the problem is that nautilus is incessantly writing ~/nautilus-debug-log.txt. I will not attach it as it is 24 MB, however $ head ~/nautilus-debug-log.txt ===== BEGIN MILESTONES ===== 0x1febd20 2008/08/09 17:53:44.4748 (GLog): Failed to initialize libhal context: (null) : (null) 0x1febd20 2008/08/09 17:53:44.4749 (GLog): Could not initialize hal context 0x1febd20 2008/08/09 17:59:43.9922 (GLog): Could not initalize the HAL context: (null) 0x1febd20 2008/08/09 17:59:43.9926 (USER): debug log dumped due to signal 11 0x1febd20 2008/08/09 17:59:43.9929 (USER): debug log dumped due to signal 11 0x1febd20 2008/08/09 17:59:44.1615 (USER): debug log dumped due to signal 11 0x1febd20 2008/08/09 17:59:44.2047 (USER): debug log dumped due to signal 11 . . . The last message appears to repeat indefinitely approximately every 50ms! For me, the most sever symptom of this is that the disk i/o goes near to maxing out. CPU usage is high, but not 100% and even if it were, the disk usage is what will render the system near unusuable. It might be worth adding that I am using an XFS file system for my home directory. In my humble opinion, this is a release critical bug and should be escalated in severity to "important" as it is crippling on a multiuser system. There appears to be an ubuntu bug report (which has become a bit of a disaster itself) https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/150471 Within that (if you can find it) is a fix by Sebastien Bacher http://launchpadlibrarian.net/12083888/nautilus.debdiff http://launchpadlibrarian.net/12083909/nautilus_2.20.0-0ubuntu7.1_source.changes http://launchpadlibrarian.net/12083923/92_from_svn_no_buggy_signal_handler.patch http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy-updates/nautilus One very good suggestion for a temporary fix (i.e., until the above is ported to Debian) is to add "killall nautilus" to /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default.
