Oh, don't use fam if you're using AFS.  It doesn't have your tokens, and
hence gets extremely confused, and then everything that tries to talk to
it doesn't work.  Install gamin instead; it's a drop-in replacement for
fam but runs as you instead of as root, so it has your tokens and will
behave properly.
