Hi Brice, thanks for the fast answer! Here is the result for all resolutions: 1400x1050: same resolution as 1600x1050, but with some screen left unused left and right. (not perfectly centered). 1250x1024: the permutation bug happened sometimes, but not always. Ugly display. 1400x900, 1280x960, 1280x800, 1280x768: Ugly display, no permutation bug. 1152x768, 1024x768, 800x600, 640x480: Ugly display, permutation bug. After playing a bit with the resolutions, the background screen became green and it was impossible to change it using the GNOME system menu. Whey I tryed to logout, X froze (but not the mouse pointer). In a second session, this did not happen anymore. I used the GNOME system menu to change the resolutions.
