Package: rsnapshot Version: 1.3.0-2 Severity: wishlist
The comments in rsnapshot.conf claim that # If no_create_root is enabled, rsnapshot will not automatically create the # snapshot_root directory. This is particularly useful if you are backing # up to removable media, such as a FireWire or USB drive. The first sentence is technically true, but is not clear about WHEN the checking for the snapshot_root directory's existence takes place. In particular, it would seem that it checks BEFORE running the commanded defined by cmd_preexec and if the root is not found at that time, rsnapshot fails and exits. The significance of this is that I would presume a common command to give to cmd_preexec is one that mounts the backup drive. This leads me to contend that the second sentence is inaccurate and misleading. The no_create_root option is not useful for backing up to removable media because it does not mount or otherwise prepare the drive (using cmd_preexec) before checking that the root exists. Thus rsnapshot will fail even if the root exists on the drive as yet umounted drive.
