Is this related to bug #487435, as suggested to be the problem with axiom bug #475170? Bug #475170 cites a poor interaction between gcl and Debian's 2.6.25 kernel - it's not limited to amd64. You mentioned gcl and I see you have a 2.6.25 kernel.
