- Since the package has not been orphaned, you don't have the authority to
  declare it to be unsuitable for release "in the maintainer's opinion".
- You don't mention any other technical problems with the package that make
  it unsuitable for release, just that it's old.
- The same version of gnus already shipped with etch, so dropping it now
  from lenny doesn't prevent it from being in /a/ stable release.

Therefore I'm downgrading this report.  The maintainer can re-raise the
severity if he chooses, or the severity can be raised by QA if there's shown
to be sufficient cause for orphaning it.
