The reason we decided to make two packages, is that the pulseaudio people had forked the original module, fixed up the pulseaudio code and ripped out everything else, thus creating two different projects. The fixes for pulseaudio is not in the -extrasound package. We uploaded two packages to NEW, one with pulseaudio support and one for the rest. The one for the rest was accepted, while the one with pulseaudio was rejected, with a message from the ftpmasters to "improve coordination".
