A default installation doesn't show my wired ethernet adapter. After hunting around on the Web, it seems that adding "allow-hotplug eth0" might have helped. I also modified the rules in /etc/dbus-1/knetworkmanager.conf to allow my user-account as a policy.

Have you read /usr/share/doc/network-manager/README.Debian?
Is your wired network adapter accessible after you have followed the instructions there?
