I've just reinstalled Debian on my laptop after trying Ubuntu for a while, so this issue got my attention again. I've posted the newer version of my patch upstream and asked them to look at it, but they seem to have never looked at the report in the first place. :-(
I think there must be some demand for popups to be disabled because the Ubuntu package appears to have been built that way. I would have thought Debian users even more likely to object to the popups than Ubuntu users.
