While there are indeed unambiguously free rogue implementations out
there, AFAICT none (at least on Rogueforge, for which I nevertheless
appreciate the pointer) is truly a drop-in replacement for the clone
that Debian wound up shipping; they all have somewhat different
gameplay and incompatible saved-game formats. :-/  As such, while any
such implementation would likely have been a better initial choice, I
am inclined to leave well enough alone (though I will keep the bug
open, at least for now).
