The patch is correct. Here is the output of desktop-file-validate when run on xsane.desktop: $ desktop-file-validate xsane.desktop xsane.desktop: warning: key "Encoding" in group "Desktop Entry" is deprecated As you can see, the "Encoding" key is depricated. The "Encoding" key is also listed as depricated on freedesktop.org [1]. As you can see, the "Encoding" key should not be present in xsane.desktop. That is why the debdiff I provided removes it.
