This is especially frightening, the two sarge1 patches did not touch the initdb code. Can you please (as your normal user) do strace /usr/lib/postgresql/bin/initdb /tmp/testdb 2>/tmp/initdb-trace.txt press Control-C after it hangs and send me /tmp/initdb-trace.txt?
