I installed now the fluxbox too, and the status of the user is now visible (screenshot attached).
It seems that the problem only appears if xchat is running on a KDE desktop. Since I used in both cases the same lenny and xchat installation and only changed the window manager, the problem is obviously in the KDE environment.
