maybe its interesting what i found out: - a few days ago synaptic segfaulted on startup; strace didn't give any insights (sometimes in a select() call, sometimes in poll()..) and found this bug report - the next time i wanted to run ethereal it also segfaulted (during a select()) - both errors happend from a root shell i've su'ed into while running X as normal user; as this non-root user i could run ethereal without segfault - i concluded that it may be in a library synaptic and ethereal are using both; found no bug report in all the libraries a searched that fit well to my symptoms - so i did a 'rm -rf .gnome* .gtk* .gconf* [..]' in my root shell ([..] means everything that looked like old GTK/Gnome stuff; our system is running for years without any "clean" install from scratch but continous updates) - voila, now root can run synaptic and ethereal again; unfortunately due to the "rm -rf" now i can't reproduce also ... - so i think this bug could be merged with #287470 and should be assigned to "the library"/"the configuration mechanism" where it really belongs to (sorry that i can't be more specific here...)
