with wxmaxima i encounter the exact same error as #432665 (closed) describes.
maxima, started in an xterm gives:

Maxima encountered a Lisp error:

 Error in PROGN [or a callee]: Couldn't protect

Automatically continuing.
To reenable the Lisp debugger set *debugger-hook* to nil.

out of memory allocating 7 bytes after a total of 220432688 bytes

The same behaviour appears for most users in debian unstable, not for all 
though.
