Hi, I'm reluctant to do this. For one thing, a fixed bzr will be released soon. For another there are two easy workarounds, installing pycurl, or prefixing the url with "nosmart+". Also, it is hoped to be able to drop pycurl and move to urllib in the future, so helping to shake out the bugs is a good thing.
