Oh, interesting, I hadn't tried that. If the xscreensaver is active,
running "xscreensaver-command -deactivate" will deactivate it as
expected. However, if the screensaver is *not* active, running
"xscreensaver-command -deactivate" hangs for 10 seconds and times out.

My only reason for wanting to run -deactivate while it isn't active is
to periodically heartbeat to keep xscreensaver from blanking the screen,
like when using mplayer to play a long movie, when I don't want it to be
interrupted. This is an example usage for the -deactivate flag in the
xscreensaver-command manpage, and is suggested by mplayer's
documentation as well, by using:

  $ mplayer -heartbeat-cmd "xscreensaver-command -deactivate" file

This had been working fine previously.

Thanks,
Jakob
