it's not showing up in the debug logs at all.

Okay, I've found that in ~/.purple/logs/aim/bk2204/.system/ , there are
files that indicate a buddy had the offending name.  It appears that
Pidgin is importing names from Evolution, where the offending name
appears in one of my contact entries.  Removing that entry makes the
warnings go away.
