I don't actually know if the server is giving you that buddy name, since it's not showing up in the debug logs at all.
Okay, I've found that in ~/.purple/logs/aim/bk2204/.system/ , there are files that indicate a buddy had the offending name. It appears that Pidgin is importing names from Evolution, where the offending name appears in one of my contact entries.
