It appears that I had the same idea: eog needs mailcap entries. So, here are some entries, derived from its FreeDesktop.org application description. I could build a mailcap-enabled package for eog just adding them to debian/eog.mime in the package source tree, as dh_installmine is called by some makefiles included from debian/rules.
