In 2008.05.15 we modified the way vmware-user is started on Linux. Please see the packaging wiki (http://open-vm-tools.wiki.sourceforge.net/Packaging) for details; look in the "X11 Autostart" section.
There was a problem with 2008.05.15: we left out the vmware-user-suid-wrapper binary. Because of that, vmware-user won't have permission to open a vmblock file descriptor and host to guest DnD operations won't work (though vmware-user will continue providing other functionality).
