I can only guess this problem was generated due to a locale misconfiguration on your side - I guess that this came out of having wrong settings for your locales. Running under a pure UTF8 environment, I can see accented (or foreign-alphabet, FWIW) characters correctly. Switching my locales to latin1, non-displayable characters get converted to '##'. Of course, this bug is almost two year old - it has probably been fixed by now.
