I don't know if it's allowed to create a postgres use called www-data:
This is how I configured my installation.
#su - postgres
$ createuser -S -D -R www-data
$ createdb -O www-data movabletypeopensource
Set DBUser to www-data in /etc/movabletype-opensource/mt-config.cgi
